Welcome Kira!
Kira Halvey joined the staff of the McHenry County Historical Society in January, 2012. She replaced the Society museum’s longtime Exhibit Curator, Grace Moline, who is now retired.
Kira, a graduate of Crystal Lake's Prairie Ridge High School, came to the museum from the Byron, Illinois Museum of History where she served as Executive Director. As our new Exhibit/Collection Coordinator, Kira's responsibilities include exhibit development and installation, collection management, interpretative program development and fabricating and installing temporary exhibits in the society’s traveling museum called “The James.” She also provides changing exhibits in the McHenry County Government Center, Woodstock Opera House and various county libraries.
With past experience in volunteer recruitment programs, school tour education and special event coordination; and her work with collections and exhibits, Ms. Halvey brought a wealth of skills to her new position.
The McHenry County Historical Society Museum has been open to the public since 1976. Operating with three employees and a vast number of volunteers the museum complex includes an 1843 log cabin, 1867 limestone school house, 1885 Township Hall, 1895 country schoolhouse, and an 1898 Country Church. Three of the listed buildings are maintained on their original sites. Within the museum itself the historical society operates a local history research library, open by appointment.
